December 1, 2011

From The Times Online:

The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has been called in to investigate the suspected baby farm that was uncovered by the authorities at an orphanage at Rawattawatte in Moratuwa on Wednesday evening, a senior official said a short while ago.

Chairperson of the National Child Protection Authority (NCPA), Ms. Anoma Dissanayake said that the CID will look into the foreign adoptions while her office will investigate the local adoptions.

“Although the place was registered in 2008, it is known to have operated for nearly 20 years or even more”, she said.

She added that investigators are going through material recovered from the orphanage which suggested that infants were sold to childless couples both in the country and over seas.

During the raid on the premises there were also 33 women in late stages of pregnancy. It has been found out that the bulk of the women were from the north and east and also certain places in the Deep South, Ms. Dissanayake further added.
