Adoption Information Meeting and Panel Discussion Spence-Chapin Services to Families and Children
May 19, 2015
6:30 PM – 8:00 PM
Spence-Chapin Services 410 East 92nd Street New York, NY 10128

From 6:30-7:30 pm, a panel of adoptees and adoptive parents share their unique insight into the ways that adoption has impacted their lives, serving as an excellent opportunity to increase your understanding of how adoption shapes families. Prospective and current adoptive parents, adoptees, and community members are encouraged to attend.

From 7:30-8:00 pm, join Spence-Chapin staff to learn about the current landscape of international and domestic adoption and the needs of the children waiting for adoptive families. We’ll discuss the scope of all Spence-Chapin adoption programs including international adoption (Bulgaria, Colombia, and South Africa) and domestic adoption (special needs adoption) as well as Spence-Chapin’s adoption services (Adoption Partnership).

This event is helpful for people simply contemplating adoption. It’s normal for prospective adopters to have many questions and this is an opportunity to find answers. Adoption is a lifelong commitment and is about providing a child in care, who cannot return home, with a permanent and secure family. Any parent can be considered – people on their own or in a relationship, working or not working, regardless of their race, religion, sexual orientation or financial situation – and time is spent matching children to families who can meet their needs.

RSVP is required

Spence-Chapin Services 410 East 92nd Street New York, NY 10128

Join us for dinner and our new parenting series, where you and other parents will learn, talk together, and hear from our family experts and guest speakers. Together, we will explore the challenges of raising children today while developing insight and confidence into your parenting. Each month we’ll discuss a new theme connected to parenting in today’s modern world of work, family life, the internet, racial and gender identity, relationships, communication, and more!

We are excited to be joined by Emily Becker-Weidman, PhD, Clinical Director of the Center for Family Development, who will offer guidance on how to tune in to your teen and improve your relationship and communication. These years are marked by dramatic shifts in your child’s physical, cognitive, emotional, and social development. We’ll talk about how to tell the difference between typical moodiness and problematic behaviors.

We’ll also cover issues like social media, self-esteem and body image, dating and sexual activity, and substance use. You’ll leave with tools to help your teen become independent, while still providing parental support and nurturing your relationship.

A vegetarian dinner will be served and guests may bring their own dinner as well. All parents and future parents are welcome to attend. Walk-ins are welcome, but it helps us plan if you register by Monday, May 18th.

What do we mean by family registration? Well that depends on what you mean by family! Spouses, partners, parents, caretakers, friends, and siblings are all welcome. Fee covers 2 adults.
