Georgia: A Country Update

May 1, 2008

A very limited number of Georgian children are eligible for intercountry adoption. In 2007, only 4 visas were issued to children adopted from Georgia. On May 1, 2008, a new adoption law took effect in Georgia that established a mandatory waiting period of 18 months before children were made available for adoption in Georgia. In addition, the new law provides for legal status change to ‘orphan’ of abandoned children previously ineligible for adoption or intercountry adoption. Placement of children with special needs will be a priority.
